On 16 December 1840, Fr Ġwann Claudio was killed in his residence on Santa Skolastika Street in Birgu.

From the chaos that was found in the place, it seems that the motive behind this crime was theft. To solve the case, the Governor promised a gift of one hundred pounds to anyone who gave any information. Despite this, the case remained unsolved.
