On 17 December 1923, the Cavalier of St Michael in Isla started to be demolished so that a public school could be built in its place.

This decision seems to have found opposition from some, so much so that it ended up coming to the attention of the Legislative Assembly. However, the school was built anyway. It was destroyed during the Second World War.
