A ceremony to mark the initiation of the building of the Capuchin Convent
The plans of the Church and of the Capuchin Convent in Kalkara were made by the Capuchin Friar Ġużepp from Isla. He based his designs on the principle of simplicity, as demanded by the Founder St Francis of Assisi.
Since these areas were part of the parish of Birgu, on 26 April 1736, the Parish Priest, Rev. Gian Paolo Pace, left Birgu in a procession carrying a cross that was placed on the ground where the convent was going to be built. The work progressed in such a way that eight months later, on 30 December, the first group of monks entered the monastery.
