Pope John Paul II was the first Pope to ever visit these islands. After the great welcome that was given to him during his entrance into the Grand Harbour, he visited the cities of Cottonera. On that day, he disembarked at Isla and then, he moved on to Bormla and Birgu, where he had a meeting with the workers.
