The area where today we find Dock no. 1, was referred to as Porto delle Gallere during the time of the Knights in Malta. Towards the middle of the 19th century, the British built a dock at this entrance. Its first stone was laid on 28 June 1844 and the dock was inaugurated on 5 September 1848.

In recent years, these areas have been rehabilitated which has allowed them to be accessible to the public once again. The restoration project was inaugurated on 27th August 2014.
