When Lorenzo Gafà designed the facade of the Church of St Lawrence, he set aside the rule of symmetry and produced a single belfry. In time, the people of Birgu wanted to have two belfries.
The first stone of the second belfry was blessed and laid by the Bishop of Malta, Mons. Pietru Pace on 3 August 1913.
