In January 1941, during one of the attacks on HMS Illustrious, the old dome of St Lawrence Church in Birgu, was heavily damaged, and later, on 4 April 1942, it collapsed.

In January 1941, during one of the attacks on HMS Illustrious, the old dome of St Lawrence Church in Birgu, was heavily damaged, and later, on 4 April 1942, it collapsed.
It was built on a design by Lorenzo GafĂ . The present dome was built on a design by Professor R. V. Galea and was inaugurated on 10 August 1954.
