Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi bought a sizeable piece of land near the Kalkara shore and gifted it to the Kalkara Parish, with the aim of building the new Parish Church on it.

The plan of the church was made by Knight Vincenzo Bonello and the architect Ġuzè D’Amato, while the first stone was blessed by Archbishop Gonzi in October 1946. The work on the building of the church proceeded at a good pace and it did not take long to be completed. Its blessing and inauguration ceremony took place on 7 September 1952 and was led by Archbishop Gonzi.
